The countryside, nature and classical art have been the elements that
in the past have brought romantic europeans down to explore the south
of Italy, and for this reason in the wake of the development of an
interesting catalogue of villas on the Amalfi Coast and in Sicily, we
have created a further section of very high-quality properties in two
particularly worthwhile areas, Apulia and the coast of Maratea in
Basilicata. Apulia stretches along the far south of the italian
peninsula with about 800 kms of enchanting coastline, with a clean,
crystal-clear sea and some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy. But
Apulia is not only about the sea, and the region is full of old
traditions and culture, the baroque architecture of Lecce, the famous
'Trulli' (rotund farm-buildings now mostly converted into interesting
homes), the castles of Frederick II, with many interesting sightseeing
trips including ancient towns such as Otranto and Gallipoli, driving
through attractive countryside. Local traditions include cooking and
wine of course, and you will have opportunities to experience and
discover them in the many typical local restaurants that you will find
throughout your holiday. Apulia has two airports, one at Bari and the
other at Brindisi, and is served by daily flights, mainly from Milan
and Rome. Maratea is considered one of the pearls of the Tyrrhenian
Sea. It lies south of Naples on the border with Calabria, and the
coast here has a special aura that has fascinated and inspired many
international artists who have sought refuge in this strip of land,
where wonderful views are thrown up from the constant interweaving of
beaches, inlets and islets, with a rich mediterranean vegetation
descending into the clear blue sea. The village of Maratea is divided
into several fractions; the old part with its medieval origins lies on
the top of the hill, whereas the harbour and hotels and other
buildings for tourism are along the coast. You should not miss the
typical local cuisine, which offers particularly tasty local dishes.
