Orta San Giulio is among one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. You enter the village by passing through elegant 17th-18th century palaces with loggias opening up the gardens sloping down towards the lake. The wrought-iron balconies on the old slate-roof houses are particularly charming. Piazza Motta is a like a lounge, closed off on three sides by arcades lined with flourishing shops while the terraces of the cafés stretch out almost to almost touch the water's edge. The Island of San Giulio stands at about 400 m from the lake shore, it is 275 m long and 140 m wide, with a perimeter of 650 m. The majority of its surface is occupied by the Seminary building built on what remained of the ancient castle tower.
