Ravello; Scala; Pontone: these villages and their bordering hamlets that are scattered through out the mountains, sweep gradually down through valleys and ancient terraced gardens towards the sea and the ancient Valli dei Mulini at Amalfi (the Valley of the Mills); Atrani and Minori are the oldest villages on the Amalfi Coast. They were originally the principal fortified ramparts in the amalfi territory. These landscapes with their wonderful hidden scenes were often celebrated in paintings, watercolours and prints by the travelling romantics of the 1800s. This is the spectacular scene that opens up before you when you arrive at Villa Centerbe. The villa is in Minuta, part of Scala, just 2 kms from Ravello. The villa is built on three levels that match the terraces in the surrounding garden. Villa Centerbe stands next to the Romanesque church L'Annunziata which dates back to early Christian times, and it is flanked by a cloister that in the olden days was a laboratory for the working of medicinal herbs. The garden of the villa was the plot where the herbs were cultivated.
