Spello, a little village in Umbria not far from the famous town of Assisi, is undoubtedly one of the region's most precious gems, and it is no coincidence that it belongs to the "Borghi più belli d'Italia" (the most beautiful villages in Italy), an association that comprises only the towns that have succeeded in preserving their monuments and artistic masterpieces in perfect architectural harmony, along with a quality of life that can infuse a new rhythm and taste into our times. Spello stands on the slopes of Mount Subasio and is built entirely from the pinkish limestone of the mountain itself: as the sun goes down the entire hamlet gleams with an extraordinary colour, a pink that gives a particular light to the houses clinging to the hillside, the roofs and the ancient walls. Girdled by the circle of walls, in its narrow lanes, well-tended and decked with flowers (this being a local tradition, since every year in May the feast of the Infiorata is held here and the streets are transformed into the most wonderful carpets of flowers), in the characteristic tower-houses and the attractive and lively squares, visitors can find all the evidence of its ancient history. This stretches from Roman to Mediaeval and Renaissance times; suffice it to mention the Baglioni Chapel in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with the frescoes by Pintoricchio, an Umbrian painter famous for his festive and courtly decorative sense. Lunario is in perfect harmony with the extraordinary charm of this little hamlet, and the visitor will find it hard not to fall in love with both. Set in the old centre of the village, inside the walls, it has been carved out of an ancient church and skilfully renovated by the owners, who have lengthy professional experience in welcoming their guests with consummate care. From a small street winding through the centre of the village, a gate leads directly into the beautiful garden of the house, boasting a magnificent view over the hills and the plain stretched out in front. An ancient patio, equipped for eating in the open air, shady spots where guests can sit and read or rest, comfortable loungers for sunbathing: everything is in harmony and the details are attended to with the same tasteful style as the interior where the classy elegance of the finishing touches comes as a delightful surprise. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming and comfortable, the bathrooms are embellished with precious materials, and the bedrooms with their different styles share the same impeccable charm. Just a few steps away is the main square of the village with all its services, the famous wine cellars, the shops selling typical products and lots of quality restaurants at affordable prices. In the summer season the guests can cool off in the small swimming pool (2.80 x 5m and 1.30m deep) that has recently been put in a corner of the panoramic garden and matches its surroundings nicely. Small dogs can be accepted, on particular conditions. Guests arriving by car are provided with a special permit by the owner so that they can access the residents-only area and park just 50 metres from the house. This accommodation is for non-smokers.
