There is a long driveway, lined with centuries-old cypress trees, leading up to Castello di Maiano, first built in the Middle Ages, then extended during the renaissance into an aristocratic residence, and lying in a panoramic position with its private chapel. It is shown on the map of Valdichiana drawn by Leonardo da Vinci in 1503. It has belonged to the same family for centuries and lies at the centre of a large estate where they produce Chianti wine and olive oil which you can buy direct from the farm. It has recently been carefully renovated, preserving the original rooms just as they have always been, with antique furniture, large 17th century stone fireplaces, splendid floors made in terracotta, stone and marble; it is however equipped with every modern convenience: central heating, internet connection, satellite TV, laundry service. The garden, which overlooks the valley, is surrounded by centuries-old trees, and on the stone panoramic terrace they have built a 16x6m swimming pool with a roman staircase lined with mosaic with 2 bathroom/dressing rooms, and next to it is also a hydromassage pool (3.5x2.5 m). From here you also access the gymnasium and sauna. All of the terrace at night is lit up by large wrought-iron lamps. The castello is 5 kms from Monte San Savino where there are excellent restaurants, and 6 kms from the A1 motorway exit, which places it in a central position for reaching, in less than an hour, all of the most interesting places to see such as Florence, Arezzo, Cortona, Siena, Montepulciano, Perugia; Rome is just an hour and a half away. The staff who look after the castello live in an independent apartment at the rear.
