The small fortified hamlet of Poggio al Vento is situated on a hilltop in the Chianti area at a height of 400 meters a.s.l. Its extraordinary position offers an extensive view of a large portion of this beautiful part of Tuscany ranging from the fortified monastery of Badia a Passignano, just a few kilometers away from Poggio al Vento, to the hills of the Val di Pesa and San Gimignano, which it is possible to see on a clear day. There was already an important fortified castle on this site back in the year one thousand and, during its long history it passed from Florentine rule (it once belonged to the powerful Buondelmonti family), to the monks of Badia di Passignano becoming, in more recent times, a country hamlet that was gradually abandoned but never lost its great charm and is now getting a new life thanks to the recent restoration work (a couple of families now live in some of the buildings). The property we are proposing used to be the residence of the castle’s lord: it is accessed by passing under an arch on the crenellated wall and going through the courtyard which is also overlooked by a small Romanesque church (only used a couple of times a year), built in local stone, like the house. The renovation work was carried out under the supervision of the Monuments and Fine Arts Office of Florence. The building’s original materials were recovered and perfectly restored and have been used alongside more modern elements (in the kitchens and bathrooms): the result is a welcoming environment that recalls the elegant moderation of historical residences, with traditional antique Tuscan furniture and impeccable details provided by the best local craftsmen. The bedrooms and kitchen offer splendid views of the Chianti valleys. There are also many stunning views to be admired in the garden at the side of the house which is enclosed by a medieval wall and has an area for eating “al fresco” and also an above ground swimming pool (3 x 5m). This very special, almost enchanted place offers easy access to Florence as well as the whole Chianti area (on request, the owner can organize visits and unusual itineraries with an expert guide).
